The Future of Geoscience + Scholarship Opportunity
With Earth Day approaching next week, GSW CEO Phoebe McMellon reflects on the essential role of the geosciences in building a sustainable future—and the importance of supporting the next generation of scientists in her most recent blog post. Learn how GSW is advancing this vision through open access research, global collaboration, and the 2025 Graduate Studies Award, a $5,000 scholarship for graduate students bringing fresh ideas and diverse perspectives to the field. We hope you will share this scholarship opportunity with your students and faculty.

Our platform provider, Silverchair, has achieved ISO 27001 certification, an important milestone in its commitment to information security. A migration to CloudFlare services is a crucial component of this certification.
Some institutional proxy IP ranges, especially those that are self-hosted, may need to be added to the allow list for CloudFlare to maintain uninterrupted access. If you haven't already done so, please send me your information and proxy IP range. GSW will take care of the steps to ensure that your proxy access continues smoothly.
GSW and our platform provider, Silverchair, have transitioned to COUNTER 5.1.
COUNTER has instituted the switch to Version 5.1 in order to better accommodate the needs of OA and provide better reporting for the significant increase in the number and variety of digital resources being offered. Additionally, COUNTER 5.1 has simplified the SUSHI harvesting protocol used for gathering COUNTER reports.
As a reminder, March 2025 was the last month Silverchair processed reports with COUNTER 5.0. All future reports will be COUNTER 5.1.
GSW recently attended and exhibited at two librarian conferences, Electronic Resources & Libraries (ER&L) and the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), and needless to say, there was much on the minds of the information professionals gathered in Austin and Minneapolis, respectively. Several key themes emerged:
Federal Budget Cuts and Resource Planning
Defending Academic Freedom
AI Tools and Information Literacy
Banned Books and Collection Challenges
Building Resilience in Uncertain Times
These conferences demonstrated that academic librarians continue to adapt to political, economic, and technological challenges while remaining committed to core values of access, privacy, and intellectual freedom. The conversations at ER&L and ACRL reflect a profession actively preparing for an uncertain future while preserving its essential mission in higher education.
Matt Hudson, GSW Director of Publishing and Publishing Services, is the inspiration behind this new section. Below he shares two of his most recent reads. We encourage you to share yours!
At 908 pages, this book is not for the faint of heart, but it’s a fascinating overview of the creation and evolution of the oil industry and its role in shaping the global economy. Of particular interest are the portions that describe governmental influence, whether that be embargoes, production caps, tariffs, and antitrust charges or waivers.
An American Childhood, by Annie Dillard - This book captures the joys of discovering oneself amid a complicated, boring, yet endlessly fascinating world. While not about geology, Dillard includes some wonderful descriptions of minerals and the rock-hound lifestyle. “I would lay about me right and left with a hammer, and bash the landscape to bits. I would rack the earth’s crust like a pinata and spread to the light the vivid prizes in chunks within.”
